Variety Mode Gold Dust Review: Is This Mushroom Cacao Worth It?
Variety Mode Gold Dust is a mushroom cacao, not a coffee: each 8 g serving of Gold Dust Cocoa declares lion's mane, cordyceps, reishi and chaga at 1,000 mg each, the most mushrooms in our top 5, plus 50 mg of added caffeine. It costs £40.00 for 30 servings (£1.33 a cup) and ranks No. 5 in our UK top 5, as our coffee-free pick.
Gold Dust in brief: a mushroom cacao, not a coffee
Gold Dust by Variety Mode is a cocoa-based powder with four mushrooms at 1,000 mg each, ashwagandha, maca and rhodiola, sold in Cocoa, Vanilla, Hazelnut and Salted Caramel; the Cocoa version adds 50 mg of caffeine extract, costs £40.00 for 30 servings (£1.33 a cup) and ranks No. 5 in our top 5.
We rate it as the best coffee-free alternative in our ranking. There is no coffee in it, which suits people who dislike the taste or want something closer to a hot chocolate. But coffee-free is not caffeine-free: the Cocoa version has caffeine added, and only Vanilla is caffeine-free, according to Variety Mode.
Its strengths are real. Gold Dust declares the most mushrooms per cup in our top 5, gives milligrams for every active, shows a 60-day money-back guarantee on its product page and is sold by a company registered in Manchester. It scores 8.1 rather than higher because of the added caffeine in Cocoa, a sample that can turn into a subscription, and a returns policy that is shorter than the guarantee.

What is in Gold Dust? Ingredients per 8 g serving
A serving is 8 g, or two small scoops, and Variety Mode suggests one a day and no more than two. Here is what the Cocoa product page declared on 29 September 2026.
| Ingredient | Per serving |
|---|---|
| Lion's mane | 1,000 mg |
| Cordyceps | 1,000 mg |
| Reishi | 1,000 mg |
| Chaga | 1,000 mg |
| Maca root | 250 mg |
| Ashwagandha | 200 mg |
| Rhodiola rosea | 25 mg |
| Vitamin B5 | 6 mg |
| Caffeine extract | 50 mg (Cocoa) |
| Cacao powder | amount not given |
Source: Gold Dust Cocoa page on varietymode.com, read on 29 September 2026.
Add up the milligrams and you get 4,475 mg of declared actives before the cacao, whose amount is not given. The 4,000 mg of mushrooms is the highest figure in our top 5: Brainstoorm and Spacegoods declare 3,000 mg, Clearly 2,500 mg and Myracle 2,100 mg. Unlike Brainstoorm and Spacegoods, it also contains reishi.
What the page leaves out matters too. The Cocoa page we link to does not say which part of the mushroom is used, but other Gold Dust pages on the same site describe 8:1 fruiting body extracts: roughly eight parts of dried mushroom for each part of extract, according to Variety Mode. The brand describes the blend as vegan and gluten-free. On reishi, human data remain limited, as reference reviews point out.
The product page also describes an effect for almost every ingredient. None of these is an authorised health claim in Great Britain, where the register lists no authorised claim for lion's mane, chaga or ashwagandha, so we leave them out. To compare Gold Dust with other mushroom cocoas, including Dirtea Cacao and Quirky Monkey, see our guide to mushroom hot chocolate in the UK.
Cocoa, Vanilla and the other flavours: caffeine in each version
Caffeine is where the four flavours part ways, and the pouches look alike, so check which one you are buying.
| Version | Caffeine per serving | Price (30 servings) |
|---|---|---|
| Cocoa | 50 mg of added caffeine extract | £40.00 |
| Vanilla | none, according to Variety Mode | £40.00 |
| Hazelnut | not published on the pages we read | £40.00 |
| Salted Caramel | not published on the pages we read | £40.00 |
| For scale: Brainstoorm (choc-hazelnut) | 20 mg | £38.00 |
| For scale: mug of instant coffee (NHS) | about 100 mg | not applicable |
varietymode.com and mushngo.com, read on 29 September 2026; NHS 'Foods to avoid in pregnancy', reviewed on 15 June 2026.
So a serving of Cocoa has about half the caffeine of a mug of instant coffee, and two servings, the most Variety Mode suggests, bring you to 100 mg. The 50 mg is the extract the brand adds; the page does not say whether the cacao brings any on top, and the NHS notes that chocolate contains some caffeine too.
If you want no caffeine at all, Vanilla is the version to buy. For Hazelnut and Salted Caramel, read the label on the pouch or ask Variety Mode before assuming either way.
Price per cup, subscription and the free sample
Every flavour cost £40.00 for a 240 g pouch of 30 servings on 29 September 2026, or £1.33 a cup, and bundles bring the price per cup down.
| Option | Price | Servings | Price per cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 pouch (any flavour) | £40.00 | 30 | £1.33 |
| 2 pouches of Cocoa | £77.00 | 60 | £1.28 |
| 3 pouches of Cocoa | £100.00 | 90 | £1.11 |
| Travel pack | £7.99 | not stated | not calculable |
Prices read in the product data of varietymode.com on 29 September 2026.
Against our top 5, a single pouch sits above Brainstoorm (£1.27), Clearly and Myracle (£1.00 each) and below Spacegoods (£1.63). The subscription is cheaper than buying one-off: Variety Mode offers rolling monthly or quarterly billing, free delivery in Great Britain, and a lower price on the first orders, with the exact figure shown at checkout.
The free sample. The product FAQ describes a 5-day sample of Cocoa (5 servings of 8 g) with one serving of the brand's cherry gummies, and the shop's product data lists it at £0.00 for the first order. The catch is in the same FAQ: the sample switches to a full-size subscription on day 7, which you can pause, skip or cancel. Other sample and travel pack listings on the site say "no subscription", so read the terms at checkout before you confirm, and note the date if you accept a subscription.
How to cancel a Variety Mode subscription
Variety Mode says you can edit or cancel your subscription at any time, and pause or skip a delivery. The product page does not spell out the steps, but the site has a My Account link and a support email address in its footer.
- Sign in through My Account on varietymode.com with the email address you ordered with.
- Find your subscription and choose pause, skip or cancel.
- If you cannot find the option, write to the support address listed on the site and keep the reply.
- For a sample, act before day 7, when the FAQ says it becomes a full-size subscription.
60 days or 30? Two different promises sit on the site. The product page shows a 60-day money-back guarantee. The refund policy page describes a 30-day return policy for items that are unused and in their original packaging, requested by email before sending anything back, with refunds within 10 business days of approval. The first is a commercial promise; the second is the general returns page. If you plan to rely on the guarantee for an opened pouch, ask Variety Mode to confirm the conditions in writing before you order.
What Trustpilot reviewers say
On 29 September 2026, Variety Mode had 1,776 reviews on Trustpilot's UK site, with a score of 4.4 out of 5. Its own product pages show a far bigger figure, 4.9 out of 5 from more than 8,400 reviews, which is easy to mistake for a Trustpilot score.
The two are not the same thing. The 8,400 or so are store reviews, collected and displayed by the shop itself on its product pages. Trustpilot is an independent review platform, not run by the brand. Neither is a test, but the Trustpilot figure is the one we use to compare brands, as we do for all five in our ranking.
Reviews mix taste, delivery, subscriptions and how people say they feel, and we do not repeat the last kind. Even among the store reviews shown on the product page, a few mention delayed deliveries or subscription orders, so allow some margin if you are running low.
Who should avoid Gold Dust?
Gold Dust packs several active plants into one scoop, so a few groups should check first.
- Anyone limiting caffeine: Cocoa has 50 mg per serving. The NHS advises no more than 200 mg a day in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, from all sources. Vanilla is the caffeine-free version, according to the brand.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and liver problems: each serving has 200 mg of ashwagandha, close to the 240 mg a day used in a 60-day trial. Rare cases of liver injury linked to ashwagandha have been reported, and the Food Standards Agency passed its call for evidence to the Committee on Toxicity, with no final opinion by 29 September 2026.
- People on blood thinners: a small, old study found that reishi at 1 g three times a day reduced platelet aggregation, and one case of liver toxicity has been linked to a reishi product. Gold Dust has 1,000 mg of reishi per serving: ask your pharmacist.
- People with kidney stones: chaga is very high in oxalates, and a case report linked long-term, heavy use of chaga powder to kidney damage.
Variety Mode's own FAQ tells anyone on medication to ask their doctor. Our guide to lion's mane side effects covers the evidence on each of these mushrooms, medicines included.
Important: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your midwife or GP before drinking Gold Dust. Choosing Vanilla removes the caffeine, but not the ashwagandha or the reishi.
Gold Dust and Brainstoorm: one for the morning, one for later
Gold Dust and our No. 1 are not rivals so much as two different cups. Here is how they compare per serving.
| Brainstoorm (choc-hazelnut) | Gold Dust Cocoa | |
|---|---|---|
| Mushrooms | 3,000 mg (no reishi) | 4,000 mg (with reishi) |
| Maca | 3,000 mg | 250 mg |
| Ashwagandha | 200 mg | 200 mg |
| Added fibre | acacia fibre 2,708 mg | none |
| Declared actives | 6,225 mg | 4,475 mg plus cacao |
| Caffeine | 20 mg (NewCaff) | 50 mg (extract) |
| Price per cup (one-off) | £1.27 | £1.33 |
| Money-back guarantee | 60 days | 60 days on the product page |
Brand pages read on 29 September 2026.
Gold Dust has more mushrooms; Brainstoorm has the most complete formula in our top 5, the only declared dose of added fibre, less caffeine and a lower price per cup. A sensible split is Brainstoorm in the morning, in its Coffee or choc-hazelnut version, and Gold Dust Vanilla later if you want a warm, coffee-free drink with no caffeine. Keep Cocoa for earlier in the day: in a 2013 study, 400 mg of caffeine taken even six hours before bed still disturbed sleep, so late caffeine is best kept low.
One caution if you drink both: two blends mean 400 mg of ashwagandha a day, which is worth raising with your GP. All five brands are compared on our best mushroom coffee UK ranking.
Our verdict
Gold Dust is a clearly labelled mushroom cacao from a UK company, with the most mushrooms per cup in our top 5 and a caffeine-free version. It earns 8.1 and fifth place because the Cocoa version adds caffeine, the sample can roll into a subscription and the refund terms need checking.
- Buy it if you want a coffee-free drink with milligrams on the label, and you pick Vanilla for no caffeine.
- Look elsewhere if you want a coffee, the lowest caffeine with a coffee taste, or the most complete formula for the price: that is Brainstoorm, our No. 1.

Variety Mode Gold Dust: frequently asked questions
Is Gold Dust a coffee?
No. Gold Dust is a cocoa-based powder with mushrooms and plant extracts, and none of its four flavours contains coffee. That makes it coffee-free, but not necessarily caffeine-free: the Cocoa version has 50 mg of added caffeine extract per 8 g serving. Only Vanilla is caffeine-free, according to Variety Mode. You make it like a hot chocolate, with hot or cold water or milk.
How much caffeine is in Gold Dust?
Gold Dust Cocoa contains 50 mg of added caffeine extract per 8 g serving, about half the 100 mg the NHS gives for a mug of instant coffee. Vanilla has none, according to the brand. For Hazelnut and Salted Caramel, the pages we read on 29 September 2026 gave no figure, so check the pouch. Variety Mode suggests no more than two servings a day.
Can I get a free sample of Gold Dust?
Variety Mode offers a 5-day sample of Cocoa, five servings of 8 g plus one serving of gummies, listed at £0.00 for the first order. Its product FAQ says the sample switches to a full-size subscription on day 7, which you can pause, skip or cancel. Other sample listings say no subscription, so read the terms at checkout before confirming.
Is Variety Mode a UK company?
Yes. Variety Mode Ltd is registered at Companies House under number 14566902, was incorporated on 3 January 2023 and gives an address in Manchester. The website describes the brand as UK based and offers free delivery in Great Britain on subscriptions. The product page does not say where the powder itself is made.
